Record of Wine Blends and other information related to a Napa Valley winery dated 1892. In dry goods booklet, partly in French and in English. Indications suggest this may have come originally from the winery where the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley is currently located. Condition fair and somewhat fragile. However, exceptionally early rare artifact from perhaps the most prominent wine growing/making area in America. Approximately 4 by 6 inches. Additional Information:A rare hand written treasure that describes how wine was made in the NAPA VALLEY of California in 1892-1895 & 1901. Of particular note are the formulas contained which show blending and fermenting. This is a small 4" x 6" account book that was used as a monthly diary by the author. The leather cover is stamped DRY GOODS & GROCERIES. The cover is loose from the book. The contents are entirely hand written. There is a name J. B. REVEYRON stamped on the inside cover. I am near the wine country in California and that is where I got the book in an estate along with some other handwritten historic materials. There are many clues to make me think this is directly related to the California wine industry just north of San Francisco in the Napa Valley. One entry reads SCHILLING 197 bbls. (San Francisco was the home of the Schilling spice co.) Other entries in the monthly diary section has him purchasing the Examiner. (April 1894 Amusement 0.15, 1. Board & room 20.00 - 3. EXAMINER ONE MONTH 0.65) The Examiner is a local San Francisco newpaper. One entry reads: J.C Bauer & Co 632 Sacramento Str. (San Francisco) The clincher is a simple entry towards the back that is in a list that reads: (Bott. Zinf #12 11500 92 NAPA Z., 6000 " "- 3500 NAPA 93 Z.)B. DREYFUSS CELLAR. .................................. The first part of the book deals with (rail?) car number entries in catagories marked L&J and K&P interspersed with pages of wine related entries. (Tank 5.8.9. & 14 Wine gall 9800 add, alcoh 350 gall, water 700 gall, Total 10850 sugar 11.74 alch 19.60) The author was French and he goes in and out of French and English (sometimes in the same paragraph). The text on the first photo you see is in French. It is showing the blends for Bordeaux, Vougeot, Bourgogne, Sauterne, Graves, Porto liqer en couleur. It lists the wines to blend and then the total along with the tanin in grams. The second photo shows English and French used. It looks like total barrel production. (Zin. Tokay, sherry, in tak 43, Cab sauv. #7 93 cab 5200, etc. Names and initials seen are L&J, K&P or K&E, Schilling, Geo West, JC Bauer & Co 632 Sacramento str (I found a Geo Bauer & Co brewers that were at 660 Sacramento St SF at that time), Sophie Bell Wolf, Minturn (S.V.V. & Co). Napa Z, B Dreyfuss cellars. There is a one page Comparaison des Thermommetre de Fahrenheit chart.

Autograph Letter Signed by Clyde Tombaugh, Professor Emeritus, New Mexico State University. On advertisement 8 x 10 single page of his book "Out of Darkness: The Planet Pluto". Tombaugh writes in detail of how he discovered Pluto: "...As you may remember some 50 years ago, my method of discovery was to take 3 plates of each sky region, a few nights apart, and examine the best matched pair under the Blink-Microscope-Comparator, seeing if one of the hundred thousand star images on each plate shifted position, and checking with the 3rd plate for confirmation. Out of 45 million stars (90 million star images) one did shift by a small amount that indicated it was beyond Neptune's orbit--Pluto. Actually, it was a very involved procedure and you would need to read this book I wrote 3/4ths of it..." Signed "Clyde W. Tombaugh/Emeritus Profess of Astronomy/New Mexico State University" To Rev and Mrs. F.W. Britton, Aug 5th, 1982. 1 pg., written sideways to accommodate blank space on advertisement so that he could avoid writing on printed text. Good condition.

This item is a signed CDV photo (about 3 x 5 inches) of Henry Ward Beecher. No backmark, although stamped with address of Joseph Ward. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Henry Ward Beecher 1813–87, American Congregational preacher, orator, and lecturer, b. Litchfield, Conn.; son of Lyman Beecher and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. He graduated from Amherst in 1834 and attended Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati. After two pastorates in Indiana, he accepted a call in 1847 to the newly organized Plymouth Church (Congregational) in Brooklyn, N.Y. Every important issue of the day was discussed on his platform. He was a leader in the antislavery movement, a proponent of woman suffrage, and an advocate of the theory of evolution. Beecher became editor of the Independent in 1861 and of the Christian Union in 1870. In 1863 he visited England, where his lectures were influential in gaining a more sympathetic understanding of the Union cause. Enthusiasm, imaginative insight, a strong interest in his fellow man, ready wit, and an easy command of English produced a convincing eloquence. The sensational lawsuit brought against him by Theodore Tilton for adultery ended after a long trial (1875) with disagreement of the jury. Beecher's friends acclaimed him victor. Despite the trial, Beecher remained influential for the rest of his life. His published works include The Life of Jesus, the Christ (1871) and Evolution and Religion (1885)

Original stock certificate signed by one of the founding brothers of the Berringer Winery. I have taken the tour of this winery in Napa Valley and it is the oldest vineyard that has continuously been open in Napa. Signed by Jac Berringer, the certificate is a "Napa and Sonoma" blank with only his name and an "X" mark written on it. The "X" voids the stock. Very presentable and highly desirable to the wine lover. About 9 x 5 inches, in very good condition.
