Description Cursive printed letter, signed in ink, dated January, 1856. One page, 8 x 10, to Mr. Burrows. The letter reads "Your kind letter dated from Hongkong 14th October and 14th November last I have received and beg to express to you my best thanks for the intelligence you thus forward to me on account of the Russian Officers and crew of the Diana, captured on board of the Brig "Greta". Though I deeply regret that the exertions of our wrecked sailors in hope of returning to their country, have had such an unfavorable issue. I am nevertheless happy to hear, that during their stay at Hongkong, they enjoyed all advantages compatible with their situation, and that owing to your kind assistance they found some relief in their captivity. It is certainly a matter of gratification that in the midst of all the calamities, inseparable from war, warm hearted men are found who like you dear Mr. Burrows, endeavour for humanity's sake to temper its cruel effects. It is there fore an agreeable duty for me to have to express to you on this occasion the thankfulness of His Imperial Majesty's Government, and I avail myself of this occasion to tender to you the renewed assurance of my distinguished esteen and regard." Signed Nojsetrodes (?). Needs further research. Slight wrinkles and small hole in text, but quite readable. Has printer's identification along side
